Our May 2012 client of the month is Kyle from Southlake! Kyle has reached his goals of gaining weight & getting stronger for water polo, and his swimming race times have been improving consistently! So working with a personal trainer isn’t just for weight loss–it’s also beneficial for improving fitness levels and gaining muscle and strength. Please enjoy Kyle’s video interview below. If you’d like to read his interview transcript, it’s just underneath the video. Kyle: I’m Kyle, I’m 17, and I am from Southlake. New Wave Fitness: Kyle, what was your reason for getting involved with New Wave Fitness? Kyle: I wanted to gain more muscle for the sports I play, which are swimming and water polo, and just get stronger all over. New Wave Fitness: So in that process, how have you seen your body change? Kyle: I’ve gotten a lot bigger and stronger. I used to be really, really skinny. I’ve noticed more strength in my swimming and water polo. New Wave Fitness: You’ve been with us for two years, is that correct? Kyle: Yes. I’ve gained 25 pounds in the last two years. I’ve improved on almost all my swimming times and have gotten [...]

Did you know there’s a specific kind of paper that can be disastrous to your health? Chances are, you touch this kind of paper on a daily basis. Some of the known and confirmed side effects of touching the chemicals this paper contains include: Breast cancer Prostate disease and cancer Diabetes Obesity Hyperactivity Immune system disorders The chemicals this paper contains also disrupt your endocrine system—your body’s hormonal system responsible for secreting growth hormone, thyroid hormone and other hormones that stimulate testosterone and estrogen. The kind of paper I’m talking about is receipt paper. Many store receipts use thermal paper that’s coated in bisphenol A (BPA), to help the ink from the printer develop onto the receipt itself. The problem is, this coating doesn’t “stick” to the paper. You’ve probably experienced this with the receipts you put in your wallet or pocket… they fade out or the ink on certain parts is completely gone, making it unreadable. This is a problem because when you handle a receipt, that same BPA coating gets onto your skin. And based on exhaustive research by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the BPA can go deep enough into the skin that it cannot be washed [...]

Every month we choose a client who has done something exceptional and reward him or her with a special gift. This month is very exciting because we are celebrating our 50th client of the month (since we began counting, that is!) That means it’s been just over 4 years where we’ve had an official winner every month. Congratulations to all 50 clients of the month! For April, our special, 50th client of the month is Kaylin, who lives in Irving, TX! She has lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks; lost 6 inches from her waist and has lost 5% body fat! Kaylin is even training with fellow boot campers for a triathlon in June! See how she did it by watching her video interview below, and if you’d like, read the interview transcript which is underneath the video… Kaylin: My name is Kaylin and I’m in Irving. I was having health problems and my doctor advised me to lose a good 20 pounds, so I know I needed to do something about it. It’s hard to do things on your own—need a little extra motivation and found the boot camp on the website and thought it sounded perfect [...]

Spring is here and if you’re like most, you’re doing a little Spring cleaning… Clearing out the garage, cleaning the house, giving away or throwing out things you don’t use anymore and ridding your house of clutter. But you know what? Most people will spend their lives cleaning out their external environments of clutter and trash… but never clear out their “inside” environment. To be more specific, most people never take the time to clean out the toxins and “trash” from their bodies! Your body absorbs all kinds of toxins, metals and industrial-grade chemicals from the environment it’s been placed in. Everything from your laundry detergent to the plastic containers that hold your food have chemicals and unhealthy compounds that seep into your body through your skin. That’s why it’s important that you rid your body of these unwelcome visitors on a regular basis. When you give your body the detox it deserves, it feels better, and it will give you a LOT more energy. So what can you do to detox? For starters, you can lighten up the toxin load placed on your body. Reduce the amount of alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and processed foods. As well, you [...]

There is a lot of misinformation in the fitness industry. It’s hard to know what to listen to and what to ignore. Here are 4 fitness myths you should know about and stay clear of: 1. If I lift weights, I’ll get bulky. Both men AND women have fallen to this myth. If you put a pound of fat next to a pound of muscle, you’ll see that a pound of fat takes up a LOT more space. Lifting weights will NOT make you bulky. To think it would is like saying learning physics will turn you into Einstein. It takes a TON of effort (and sometimes a lot of drugs) to get as big as some of the top professional bodybuilders around today. So lift without worry, knowing that weight lifting will make you sleek and toned. 2. Morning is the best time to train. Newsflash—your body doesn’t care what time you work out. As long as you put in the same amount of effort and intensity, you will burn an equal amount of calories. So feel free to train whenever you feel your strongest and most energetic. 3. Not eating carbs will make you lean. The truth is [...]

Everyone understands the importance of a healthy heart, but maintaining one can prove difficult. Cardiovascular health can be compromised by diet, genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and an array of other factors. Moreover, our bodies are often deficient in substances critical to healthy heart function. One example is Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which helps produce energy in each cell, particularly those in the heart, the most active organ in the body. The beating heart and electrical conduction of the nervous system need a continuous flow of energy that is dependent on adequate levels of CoQ10 in the cells. CoQ10 also has antioxidant properties, protecting LDL cholesterol from oxidation, thereby helping to maintain vascular tone and integrity. CoQ10 has the ability to recycle and regenerate vitamin E, allowing it to continue providing antioxidant protection to cells of the body. Although the human body can synthesize CoQ10, in some situations the body’s capacity to produce CoQ10 isn’t sufficient to meet its needs. CoQ10 levels reach their peak in the human body by age 20 and fall slowly thereafter. In fact, 60% of the population has CoQ10 deficiency in their 50s and 60s. In addition, certain medications can reduce the body’s production of CoQ10. [...]

Congratulations to our March 2012 Clients of the Month, Mike & Marilyn Williams from Azle, Texas! You’ve got to see this story…amazing. Mike was actually scheduled for gastric bypass surgery before they started with their personal trainer. (If you’d like to read the transcript of Mike & Marilyn’s interview, it’s below the video.) Mike: I’m Mike Williams from Azle, Texas. Marilyn: I’m Marilyn Williams from Azle, Texas. Mike: Overweight big time. Wouldn’t go to concerts, didn’t want to sit in the chairs. Didn’t go to football games. Anything with stadium-type seating, I didn’t want to go. Marilyn: Wouldn’t fly. Mike: Didn’t like flying because you have to ask for the extension and that kind of gets a little embarrassing, it really does. Just basically couldn’t bend over and pick things up and really going in the wrong direction. Marilyn: Or you’d have to crawl across the floor to pull yourself up because you couldn’t get up on your own. But my personal journey began taking care of mothers. I would have to lift their wheelchairs, lift them and lift walkers, and they were pretty weak. I had to do everything for them. So I started just to get [...]

We are privileged to have a guest author on our blog today – Shane Doll from Shaping Concepts in Charleston, South Carolina. Shane is writing on this topic, which is great timing considering we’ve been surrounded with sugary temptations from Valentines to Easter. Tips for Overcoming Strong Sugar Cravings Without question one of the biggest obstacles individuals face when starting a weight loss program is dealing with those awful sugar cravings. You make the move to pull out all the processed foods along with sodas and sweets, but then the side effects kick in. You experience mood changes, irritability, headaches, and those over so strong cravings for sugar. Your body seems to be fighting against you every step of the way. In reality, this is simply a natural part of breaking a sugar addiction. The fact is, when you subject your body to high levels of sugar over prolonged periods of time, you’ll undoubtedly experience discomfort when pulling it out. Not only are you dealing with withdrawal symptoms due to sugar’s affect on the opioid receptors in the brain, but you’re also dealing with the side effects of detoxification. In short, there are numerous physiological changes going on throughout your body when you [...]

Oprah and E.F. Hutton have something in common: When they talk, people listen. On her TV show, Oprah showcased the Shaklee Get Clean Healthy Home Pack, which incidentally is the same package that we reward our clients of the month with here at New Wave Fitness. (See the video below.) Find out how asthma or breathing problems could be attributed to common household cleaning products. Learn about a natural solution. We’ve gotten rave reviews from the recipients of the Get Clean pack, which can be seen here: Shaklee Get Clean Healthy Home Pack.
